Mathematics equips children with the tools to understand everyday life.
These tools include logical reasoning, problem-solving skills and the ability to think in abstract ways. Mathematics helps children to analyse and synthesise their experiences through acts of organising, explaining, predicting and justifying events in order to make sense of the real world.
At The Elms children have opportunities to apply and develop their mathematical knowledge and understanding through a variety of classroom activities and in other relevant areas of the curriculum. We believe it is important that children should enjoy Mathematics and study it with confidence and a sense of achievement and fun.
Our scheme of work incorporates significant aspects of the New Primary Maths Curriculum which is supported by a range of products and resources. These include Abacus, Maths on Target and New Wave Mental Maths to help provide a stimulating and rigorous approach. We recognise that within each classroom there will be pupils of widely differing mathematical aptitudes and we aim to provide suitable learning opportunities by matching the challenge of the task to the ability of the child. In addition, classroom support is used to stretch all abilities so that appropriate work is set to match the needs of the individual.
