Life in Year 2

Our topic in the Michaelmas term was 'Barnaby Bear goes to Kenya'. We had lots of fun finding out information about our locality and Kenya. We were surprised at some of the differences we found! A man called Mr Knipe from Action Aid visited us and bought along lots of artefacts for us to look at, including an African water container. We really enjoyed having a go at balancing it on our heads when it was empty and trying to carry it around the classroom when it was full. It was really heavy! It was difficult to imagine children our age travelling hours upon hours and going to such lengths to obtain water. We also linked our studies to Art and enjoyed getting messy and making Kenyan village houses out of shoeboxes and hay!

In keeping with the school's ethos of supporting different charities we joined in with the fun of 'Children in Need' this year. We decorated cakes in preparation for a fundraising cake stall, made Pudsey bear masks and did some bear puzzle booklets. There were also some extra special guests in our classrooms for the day... Our teddies! There was a competition for the best Pudsey look-a-like, even the teachers joined in the fun! A good day was had by all.

At The Elms we love getting out and about into the local community! In November we walked into Long Eaton to visit the War Memorial to further our understanding of the importance of Remembrance Day. When we arrived we had a discussion about what we could see and then spent some time sketching the memorial and sharing our ideas. Our teachers then told us a little more information about its significance; we said a prayer and had time to reflect. When we got back to school Year 2 then sold poppies to children and staff members in the Lower School.
