ACADEMIC Subjects

Year 3 to Year 6 : 7 - 11 years

Pupils move into Key Stage Two in the September following their 7th birthday. The Year Three classes remain within the familiar surroundings of The Elms Lower School, whilst Years Four, Five and Six have their classes in The Elms Upper School Building situated at the top of the Trent College campus.

The Junior timetable becomes increasingly varied with the pupils studying the specialist subjects of French, German, Music, Physical Education, Drama, Dance as well as Information Communication Technology (ICT) and Science.

Academic Excellence

From Year Three to Year 6 our pupils are treated as individuals. Differentiated teaching takes place in all year groups, with the brightest and most able pupils stretched with challenging problem solving activities, breath of curriculum opportunities and integrated ICT, whilst those pupils who require support and individual attention are offered guidance, help and nuturing with a support teacher during the week. A constant check is kept on the progress of each pupil with reports and parental consultations forming the major part of the communication between parents and the school, although we encourage parents to maintain close contact with us through the class teacher and the pupil's homework diary. An appointment to talk to the class teachers, Deputy Head or Head Teacher may be made at any time.

A Positive Culture

Good work, attitudes and behaviours are encouraged and rewarded by praise, privilege and team stars. Team stars are achieved individually and combine towards a termly house total for one of our three school houses - Bannister, Mallory and Sharman. Pupils respond positively to our ethos of developing their confidence and high motivational levels.
