The Music Department is a busy, vibrant and integral part of The Elms. The department offers an extensive extra-curricular activity program.
All pupils in the Junior school are encouraged to take individual music lessons and this is initially sponsored by the school in Year 3. Opportunities are available on a broad range of orchestral instruments; violin, viola, cello, double bass, guitar, harp, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, cornet, french horn, trombone, tuba and percussion are all taught by a talented team of visiting specialist instrumental staff.
Collaborative music making is a fundamental part of music education. All pupils receiving instrumental tuition use and apply their musical skills and knowledge in a wide variety of ensemble situations, discovering and experiencing first-hand the immense joy of making music with others. Twenty eight ensembles catering for all ages and abilities in the Junior school rehearse in the music school each week.
There are extensive performance opportunities for pupils to showcase their talents both collectively and as individuals throughout the year including; orchestral showcases for year three, vocal, piano and percussion showcases, Carols by Candle Light Service, Seasonal Sounds Concert, Music Extravaganza Orchestral Day, Spring Strings Concert, Summer Breeze Concert, joint productions and shows with the drama department.
Children are entered for Associated Board and Trinity Examinations. The Elms hosts two examination sessions each year.
Our young musicians have performed recently in venues further afield, Derby Cathedral, Bennetts in Derby, John Lewis in Nottingham and St Peters Church in Ruddington. Some of our pupils are involved with the Nottingham Youth Training Orchestra. Pupils have also been successful in gaining music scholarships to Trent College.
